HC Deb 27 November 1997 vol 301 cc655-6W
Mr. Simon Hughes

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what are the bed occupancy rates for(a) acute, (b) psychiatric and (c) care of the elderly wards for each of the last 10 years. [17389]

Mr. Boateng

Figures on bed occupancy were collected in 1996–97 for the first time since 1986. The information is based on broad ward type and is contained in "Bed Availability and Occupancy, England: 1996–97", copies of which are available in the Library.

Data for 1986 were collected on a different basis and are not directly comparable. The figures were 75 per cent. for the acute specialties, 85 per cent. for psychiatric and 89.2 per cent. for geriatric.
