§ Miss WiddecombeResponsibility for this matter has been delegated to the Director General of the Prison Service, who has been asked to arrange for a reply to be given.
Letter from Richard Tilt to Mr. Chris Mullin, dated 20 March 1997:
The Home Secretary has asked me, in the absence of the Director General from the office, to reply to your recent Question seeking further information about Prison Service staff: prisoner ratios. As the Director General indicated in his reply to Sir Ivan Lawrence in February, the fall in the staff:prisoner ratio reflects the change in prison officer working practices and the reduction in their hours worked. I regret that it is not possible to estimate how much of the change in the ratio is due to any single factor.
