HC Deb 18 March 1997 vol 292 c583W
Mr. Key

To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will set up an inquiry into the delivery of paediatric cardiac surgical services at Bristol royal infirmary from 1990 to 1995. [21263]

Mr. Dorrell

Yes. Concerns about the quality and management of paediatric cardiac surgical services and related issues at that time lead me to believe that an inquiry is necessary. However, the General Medical Council is currently considering proceedings in respect of paediatric cardiac surgery at the United Bristol Healthcare national health service trust and I would not wish to prejudice its deliberations. Therefore this inquiry will not start until the GMC has completed its proceedings. Further announcements about the remit and form of the inquiry will be made in due course.
