Mrs. Dunwoody

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions what plans he has to require Eurotunnel shuttle trains to list individual passengers travelling on their trains. [20401]

Ms Glenda Jackson

Mrs. Dunwoody

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions what consultations he has held with Eurotunnel authorities and ferry companies on the implications of the draft directive requiring the listing of each passenger travelling across the English Channel. [20400]

Ms Glenda Jackson

The Transport Council in June reached political agreement on a draft Directive requiring the listing of passengers on sea services of more than 20 miles within the European Union. We have since consulted the shipping and ports industries informally on which services might justifiably be exempted from such a requirement and on how the requirement might most conveniently be implemented. Formal consultation will be undertaken on the draft regulations which would transpose the draft Directive into UK law.
