HC Deb 09 December 1997 vol 302 c524W
Mr. Dafis

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what assessment he has made of whether consumers have adequate information about food packaging which is potentially disruptive to endocrine systems. [19711]

Mr. Rooker

It is recognised by most scientists that evidence of the disruption to endocrine systems by chemicals which might migrate from packaging is not conclusive at present and that considerable further research is required before there is adequate information about effects and causes. The Government have an active programme of research and surveillance on the migration of chemicals from packaging including possible "endocrine disrupters". The results of this work are reported in the MAFF/DH "Food Safety Information Bulletin" together with advice from expert committees.
