HC Deb 28 October 1996 vol 284 cc38-9W
Mr. Redmond

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what plans he has to seek compensation in respect of the NHS HISS. [452]

Mr. Horam

There is no such thing as a national health service hospital information support system—HISS. In 1989, the NHS executive established a HISS initiative to test out the means of purchasing and implementing hospital-wide integrated computer systems. The 25 NHS trusts sponsored by this initiative demonstrated a number of options for achieving this goal. These were pilot projects and have provided the basis of lessons learned for the future. The National Audit Office report on the HISS initiative published on 17 April 1996 makes no suggestion of waste of money. On the contrary, it recommends further work by the NHS executive to increase the value for money already obtained.
