HC Deb 08 May 1996 vol 277 c139W
Ms Short

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport (1) what plans he has to extend the 44-tonnes lorry limit to piggyback wagons; and if he will make a statement; [28553]

(2) what plans he has to extend the 44-tonnes lorry limit to interchange with ports; and if he will make a statement. [28558]

Mr. Norris

We shall consider over the next few months whether to propose any wider use of six-axled lorries with a maximum permitted gross weight of 44 tonnes.

Ms Short

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what plans he has to improve enforcement of the 44-tonnes lorry limit; and if he will make a statement. [28560]

Mr. Norris

I am not aware of any problems of enforcement in connection with the present restricted use of the 44-tonnes lorry weight limit, and therefore have no plans to change present arrangements.
