HC Deb 25 March 1996 vol 274 c402W
Mr. Michael

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) which of the 26 police tasks to be reviewed under the police core roles and ancillary tasks report have been identified as being less cost-effective if they were removed from police responsibility; [22083]

(2) what savings his Department expects as a result of the police core roles and ancillary tasks report; and if he will list the savings he expects to attribute to each of the 26 identified police tasks. [22082]

Mr. Maclean

Work is still in progress on these matters in consultation with the police and other interested parties, as part of the follow-up work to the review. We expect to receive a report on the review's proposals, including an evaluation of savings and other benefits, by the summer.

Mr. Michael

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the cost of the Home Office inquiry into police core roles and ancillary tasks, established in 1993 and reporting in 1995. [22081]

Mr. Maclean

The total estimated cost to my Department of conducting the review, including pay costs, travelling and subsistence, and the final costs of printing and distribution, amounted to about £232,000.
