HC Deb 04 June 1996 vol 278 c425W
Mr. Allen

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what are the reasons for the prohibition of people with diabetes subject to insulin treatment from holding a large goods vehicle driver's licence. [30538]

Mr. Norris

The prohibition is based on authoritative medical advice about the risk of a hypoglycaemic attack, which may occur suddenly and unpredictably and can cause loss of consciousness. A significant proportion of collapses at the wheel have been found to be associated with insulin treatment.
