To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will list by police force area the number of roadside checks undertaken by the Vehicle Inspectorate which have had to be cancelled over the last 12 months due to lack of police resources. [30490]

Letter from Ron Oliver to Mrs. Gwyneth Dunwoody, dated 4 June 1996: The Secretary of State has asked me to reply to your question on the number of roadside checks cancelled due to lack of police resources. The information requested was not collected prior to 1 October 1995. However, out of a total of 2113 roadchecks carried out, the number cancelled by police during the period I October 1995 to 31 March 1996—by police force area—was as follows:
