To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what is his assessment of the amount of beef which is currently being kept in cold storage. [24943]

Our estimate of the amount of raw beef in cold storage on 17 July in the United Kingdom is as follows:

In interventions stores 22,000
In Beef Stocks Transfer Scheme 130,000
From over 30 Month Cattle Scheme 3,800
Private unsaleable stock 2500
Total 56,300
1 Based on quantity claimed for and therefore includes stocks which may on investigation be ineligible and beef destroyed overseas or not yet returned to the UK.
2 Based on expressions of interest in Intervention Board for Agricultural Produce Disposal Scheme.

In addition, we estimate that about 65,000 tonnes of beef will be produced this month for UK consumption.
