To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what methods Scottish Natural Heritage uses to calculate the number of sites of special scientific interest damaged in Scotland each year. [39239]

The definition used in categorising damage to sites in Scotland are set out in the annual report of Scottish Natural Heritage, a copy of which is in the Library.

Scottish Natural Heritage is adopting the principles laid down in the "Common Standards for Monitoring" report—Joint Nature Conservation Committee, 1993.
