To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how much money has been paid to Tate and Lyle plc, in relation to its cane sugar refinery in Greenock, by way of regional selective assistance grants in the period of time in which such grants have been available; and if he will make a statement. [38519]

Since the introduction of regional selective assistance under the Industry Act 1972, Tate and Lyle plc, through Tate and Lyle Industries Ltd., has received a total of £600,000 in regional selective assistance in respect of its cane sugar refinery in Greenock, the latest payment being made in 1988.
