To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will make a statement concerning the progress of forecast expenditure towards the convergence targets set for economic and monetary union. [692]

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

There is no convergence target for public expenditure which is a matter for national Governments to decide. I expect the United Kingdom to meet the convergence criteria and to be in a position to decide whether to participate in monetary union when the time comes.
