HC Deb 23 November 1995 vol 267 cc270-1W
17. Mr. Jon Owen Jones

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what effect VAT extension has had on the economy and on living standards. [708]

Mr. Heathcoat-Amory

The extension of VAT to domestic fuel and power contributed to the Government's objective of controlling and reducing the PSBR. This is the best way to achieve sustainable growth in the economy and in living standards. There was a generous compensation package to compensate those hit hardest by the change.

18. Mr. Hall

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will make a statement on the rate and scope of VAT. [709]

Mr. Heathcoat-Amory

I cannot anticipate my right hon. and learned Friend's Budget statement.

21. Mr. Gapes

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what plans he has to extend the scope of VAT. [713]

Mr. David Heathcoat-Amory

The Government's taxation plans are announced in my right hon. and learned Friend's Budget speech and not before.
