To ask the Secretary of State for Transport (1) what is his policy on road pricing; [23859]

(2) when he intends to introduce motorway tolls. [23858]

As far as policy on road pricing in urban areas is concerned, the Government are considering the report that the Transport Select Committee issued on the subject in April and will respond in due course.

Policy on tolling the motorway network remains as set out by the then Secretary of State for Transport on 2 December 1993, Official Report, column 646–49. Its introduction is subject to the availability of suitable technology, which we are assessing, and Parliament's approval of the necessary legislation.
