HC Deb 15 March 1995 vol 256 c587W
Mr. Alton

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs which way representatives of Her Majesty's Government voted at the United Nations meeting held in New York on the motion condemning the abuse of human rights in China; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

The EU, with the support of a number of other countries, tabled a draft resolution on human rights in China at the 51st UN Commission on Human Rights in Geneva. The United Kingdom voted in favour of the resolution, which narrowly failed to pass. Prior to this, the UK voted against a Chinese motion proposing that no action be taken on the draft resolution.
