To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is(a) the total cost of the Frederick West operation to the Gloucestershire constabulary to date and (b) the estimated cost of the entire inquiry; and what percentage of the annual budget these sums represent.

As at 19 January, the estimated total cost to date was £1.4 million. This represents 2.6 per cent. of the force budget for 1994–95. The additional cost to the force is some £670,000 or 1.2 per cent. of budget.

The chief constable is not able at present to make a firm estimate of the total costs expected to be incurred.
