Letter from Brigadier J. R. Drew to Dr. David Clark, dated 11 December 1995: I am replying to your question to the Secretary of State for Defence about the principal locations of a number of Defence Agencies, including the Army Base Repair Organisation (ABRO), and how many staff, military and civilian, are employed at each location. I have enclosed a table which gives the location of all the ABRO workshop sites and offices and the numbers employed at each, as at 1 November 1995. These range from major workshop facilities such as those at Donnington and Bovington to small offices arranging the repair of equipment under contract by industry. I have enclosed an information pack about the agency which includes the Annual Report and Accounts 94/95, the Corporate Plan 1995 and a brief history. I hope that you find this useful.

Letter from Air Vice-Marshal R. H. Kyle to Dr. David Clark, dated 11 December 1995: I am replying to your Question to the Secretary of State for Defence in which you asked for details of the principal locations of the RAF Maintenance Group Defence Agency and how many uniformed and civilian personnel are employed at each location, as this matter falls within my area of responsibility. The information you requested is listed as an attachment to this letter. The figures are as at 30 September 1995, which is the most recent date for which centrally held figures are available. As a result of the end of the Cold War and a reduction in the perceived threat, and in common with other elements of the Ministry of Defence, the Agency is in the process of rationalising its operations and reducing in size. This is expected to lead to the closure of RAF Carlisle, RAF Quedgeley and RAF North Luffenham over the next 3 years. In addition, the number of personnel in the Agency will reduce to approximately 2,400 uniformed and 5,400 civilian staff by 1999. I hope that this information meets your requirements.

Letter from P. J. Trevelyan to Dr. David Clark, dated 11 December 1995:

DEFENCE ACCOUNTS AGENCY I am replying to your Question to the Secretary of State for Defence about the principal locations of my Agency and the numbers of staff employed at each location. The Defence Accounts Agency operates from five locations in the UK: two in Bath; and one each at Cheadle Hulme, Liverpool and Worcester. The numbers of staff currently employed at each location are as follows:

Number
Bath (Pinesgate West) 119
Bath (Warminster Road) 294
Cheadle Hulme 277
Liverpool 641
Worcester 167
Total 1,498
These are all civilians—the Agency does not employ uniformed personnel. You may also wish to note that the Agency is currently restructuring following its first three year review as a Defence Agency (Defence Accounts Agency Annual Report and Accounts 1994–95—HC Paper No. 542 refers). Some restructuring has already occurred and is reflected in the information given above. The remainder entails demerger into two separate agencies: the Defence Bills Agency and the Pay and Personnel Agency. This is expected to occur early in the New Year. Both organizations will continue to operate from their existing sites, ie: the Defence Bills Agency at Liverpool; and the Pay and Personnel Agency from Bath, Cheadle Hulme and Worcester, as listed above.

Letter from Colonel A. H. Roache to Dr. David Clark, dated 11 December 1995: I am replying to your question to the Secretary of State for Defence about locations and staff numbers in Defence Agencies. This falls within my area of responsibility. The Defence Animal Centre operates from a single site at Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire and retains a training area at RAF Syerston in Lincolnshire. The number of staff employed as at 01 Nov 96 was 135 military and 48.5 civilian.
