HC Deb 25 April 1995 vol 258 cc505-6W
Mr. Sheerman

To ask the secretary of State for Transport, how many jobs he estimates will be lost as a consequence of the sale of the Transport Research Laboratory. [20562]

Mr. Norris

No jobs will be lost as a consequence of the sale of the Transport Research Laboratory. Staffing levels at the laboratory will continue to reflect management's view of the skills and resources required to meet the future demand for its services.

Mr. Gerrard

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if it is his intention to make the information memorandum on the sale of the Transport Research Laboratory publicly available; and what are the reasons for his decision on this matter. [20585]

Mr. Norris

It is not my right hon. Friend's intention to make the information memorandum on the sale of the Transport Research Laboratory publicly available, because it will contain commercially confidential information, the disclosure of which would be prejudicial to the sale process and the laboratory's competitive position.

Mr. Gerrard

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, pursuant to his statement on the privatisation of the Transport Research Laboratory, what is the nature and duration of the guarantees of future work. [20584]

Mr. Norris

The Government intend to offer the Transport Research Laboratory contracts for future research work, subject to the delivery of high-quality, independent and impartial research at competitive prices. Details of the proposed guarantees will be included in the information memorandum which is expected to be available to interested parties by the end of June.
