To ask the Secretary of State for Education what was the cost of establishing the Further Education Funding Council. [18605]

The running cost expenditure of the council for 1992–93, the period in which it was established, was £24.4 million, most of which expenditure was devoted to preparing colleges for incorporation. The council's running cost for 1993–94, which related principally to the administration of the new sector, was £18.8 million. In both periods, the process of establishing the council was assisted by the work of officials within my Department. Figures disaggregating the cost of their contributions to the establishment of the council are not available.
