The Home Secretary has asked me to reply to your recent Question asking how many young people are currently being held in adult prisons.On 30 September 1994, 876 young persons (inmates aged between 15 and 20 and sentenced young offenders aged 21) were held in adult prisons (local prisons, closed training prisons and open prisons) in England and Wales.
