HC Deb 22 November 1994 vol 250 c105W
Dr. Marek

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what is his policy on whether applications for EU membership from the V-4 group of central European nations would be considered by the Union simultaneously.

Mr. David Davis

The Copenhagen European council—June 1993—agreed that associated countries of central and eastern Europe that so desired shall join the European Union when they are ready to assume the obligations of membership. We expect applications for European Union membership to be considered on their merits. So far, only Poland and Hungary have formally applied to join the European Union.
