HC Deb 23 March 1994 vol 240 cc223-4W
Ms Ruddock

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many safer cities programmes were running each year since 1 April 1989; what was the total cost of their budgets for each year from 1989–90; how many will be running on 1 April; and what will be the total of their budgets for 1994–95.

Mr. Charles Wardle

The number of safer cities projects operated and the total cost of their budgets since 1 April 1989 is as follows:

Year Projects Cost (£ million)
1989–90 16 3.3
1990–91 16 6.3
1991–92 20 7.2
1992–93 20 7.7
1993–94 120 26.0
31 April 1994 14 22.1
1 The figure for 1993–94 excludes the 10 new areas which were announced in December 1993 and are currently being established.
2 Estimated.
3 Announcements on further projects are planned for 1994–95. As the bulk of the funding for safer cities is to be included in the single regeneration budget to be administered by the Department of the Environment from 1 April 1994, the precise timetable for later waves, together with associated costs, will be drawn up in conjuction with my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for the Environment. The costs quoted are therefore only those which remain funded by the Home Office.

The costs include some expenditure, such as project staff salaries and rent for office accommodation, which is incurred by the safer cities central team.
