HC Deb 23 March 1994 vol 240 c223W
Mr. David Young

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will institute a public inquiry into the length of time it took to bring to trial those accused of the death of Mr. William McGrath, of Morrison street, Bolton, and the access to drugs of the key witnesses in the case who were under police protection; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Charles Wardle

The listing of cases for trial is a matter for the courts.

The actions taken by police officers in the course of their duties are operational matters and entirely the responsibility of the police. I understand, however, that at no time during this case were any witnesses under police protection.
