HL Deb 02 March 1994 vol 552 c78WA
Viscount Waverley

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What assistance has been given under the National Indicative Programme and the Caribbean Regional Programme for the banana industry since 1988 in the Windward Islands, Belize and Jamaica respectively.

Baroness Chalker of Wallasey

National Indicative Programmes do not readily break down to show assistance to the banana industry. Allocations for agricultural development overall for the period 1990–1995 are as follows:

(mecu) £ (£ 1 = 1.3426 ecu)
£ million
Dominica: 2.75 205
Grenada: 1.4 1.04
St. Vincent and the Grenadines: 3.33 2.48
St. Lucia: 1.5 1.12 million
Belize: No commitment
Jamaica: 17.25 12.85

The Caribbean Regional Programme, from which all the above-mentioned countries benefit, is 90 mecu (£ 67 million) for 1990–1995. One of its focal areas is agriculture. Information is not held centrally for years prior to 1990.
