To ask the Secretary of State for Education what is his Department's estimate of the number of commercial outdoor activity centres currently operating in England and Wales.

Precise figures are not available, and the exact number of centres is likely to vary from time to time. It is estimated that about 3,000 are currently in operation.

To ask the Secretary of State for Education how many outdoor activity centres will be inspected by the Health and Safety Executive over the next two years.

Mr. Forth

As part of the special programme of inspections announced by my right hon. Friend on 11 November 1993, the Health and Safety Executive are planning to inspect about 100 centres over the next two years.
