HL Deb 07 February 1994 vol 551 cc114-5WA
Lord Mason of Barnsley

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Pursuant to their reply of 28th July 1993 concerning General Service Medal Awards, whether they have now decided to award officially a medal for service in former Yugoslavia, and whether those servicemen who have completed numerous tours in Northern Ireland will be enabled to receive a clasp or clasps to their General Service Medal 1962.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Ministry of Defence (Viscount Cranborne)

The Ministry of Defence is considering what form of recognition should be granted for service in the former Yugoslavia. At present, our plans are at an early stage, and it is too early to say when formal proposals will be submitted to Her Majesty the Queen for approval.

Service personnel who have completed numerous tours in Northern Ireland will not be awarded a further clasp, or clasps, to the General Service Medal (1962). However, Service personnel who have completed 36 months' aggregated service in operational theatres, including Northern Ireland, and who have qualified for the award of the General Service Medal (1962) since 14th August 1969, will be eligible for the award of the Accumulated Campaign Service Medal, the institution of which was announced in my reply of 27th January to the noble Lord, Lord Brougham and Vaux (Official Report, col. WA 80).
