HC Deb 22 April 1994 vol 241 cc696-7W
Mr. Cousins

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what storage or disposal sites are operated by the national disposal services for radioactive materials and sources used by the NHS; which NHS agency operates this service; and if she will list the contractors approved by the service for replacing, recovering and transporting such sources.

Mr. Sackville

AEA Technology and British Nuclear Fuels plc—BNFL—accept wastes whose disposal via their services is permitted under an authorisation, or which is subject to the Radioactive Substances (Waste Closed Sources) Exemption Order 1962.

There is no national health service agency operating this service and information about contractors used is not available centrally.

Each hospital is responsible for the safe storage and disposal of any radioactive materials and sources that may be used as set out in authorisations issued to each hospital by Her Majesty's inspectorate of pollution under the Radioactive Substances Act 1993.
