HC Deb 18 October 1993 vol 230 c92W
Mr. Beggs

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will make a statement on future planning for waste disposal in the Greater Belfast area.

Mr. Atkins

Waste disposal planning is a matter for the district councils. Under article 4 of the Pollution Control and Local Government (Northern Ireland) Order 1978, councils are required to prepare—and update from time to time—plans for the disposal of waste.

Proposals for changes in the legislation dealing with waste were recently announced in a consultation paper dated March 1993. These proposals do not include any changes in the responsibility for planning for waste disposal.
