To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many remand prisoners were being held in police cells in London on the last day for which figures are available.

Responsibility for this matter has been delegated to the director general of the Prison Service, who has been asked to arrange for a reply to be given.

Letter from D. Lewis to Mr. Jeremy Corbyn, dated 30 November 1993: The Home Secretary has asked me to reply to your recent Question about the number of prisoners in police cells in London. No remand prisoners are currently being held in police cells in London and it is many months since such action was necessary.

Lewis to Mr. Jeremy Corbyn, dated 30 November 1993: The Home Secretary has asked me to reply to your recent Question about the daily costs of holding a remand prisoner in (a) a police cell and (b) prison. In 1992–93 the average daily cost of holding prisoners was £254 in police cells and £75 in local prisons and remand centres. The costs of remand prisoners are not recorded separately from those of other inmates.
