HC Deb 26 November 1993 vol 233 c244W
Mr. Llew Smith

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will make a statement on initiatives taken to protect agricultural land and inland waterways and lakes from acid rain in Wales.

Mr. Redwood

A wide range of measures are being taken throughout the United Kingdom to reduce the emissions which cause acid rain. These include significant action to reduce emissions from the power industry, the fitting of catalytic converters to all new cars and the implementation of the pollution control systems under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

In addition, the Welsh Office in conjunction with the National Rivers Authority and the Countryside Council for Wales is promoting research and monitoring on the environmental impact of acid deposition in Wales. Action is also in hand to evaluate the effectiveness of liming on agricultural land and waterways in Wales affected by acid deposition.
