HC Deb 01 November 1993 vol 231 cc11-2W
Mr. Mackinlay

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what geological surveys were made in relation to the site of the Thurrock service area serving the M25 prior to its construction; and to what extent methane or similar gases were found on the site or in the immediate location.

Mr. Key

The Department was aware that part of the Thurrock motorway service area site had previously been used for landfill waste and studies carried out before bids were invited for its development confirmed the presence of both methane and carbon dioxide. Further studies were carried out by the selected developer before construction began to determine the best method of treatment.

The Department took expert advice, and consulted the relevant authorities, before approving the landfill gas control system and the associated monitoring equipment now installed at the site. The safety of service area users is of paramount importance and the control and monitoring procedures are therefore subject to regular review. I am satisfied that these arrangements provide adequate protection for MSA staff and users.
