HC Deb 31 March 1993 vol 222 c212W
Mr. Wigley

To ask the President of the Board of Trade if he will ensure that, as part of any deregulation steps being taken by the Government in relation to the coal mines, there is full discussion with the trade unions on questions relating to safety standards in private coal mines; and if he will consult the Health and Safety Executive before taking any final decisions.

Mr. Eggar

[holding answer 30 March 1993]: The Government are determined that there should be no lowering of safety standards in coal mines. It is for the Health and Safety Commission and its executive to regulate safety in the coal industry in consultation with all interested bodies, including the trade unions. My Department will continue to keep the Commission informed about developments in the industry.
