HC Deb 29 March 1993 vol 222 cc35-9W
Mr. Blunkett

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many district health authorities existed in 1980–81, 1990–91, 1991–92 and 1992–93; how many she expects to exist by the end of 1993–94; and if she will make a statement.

Mr. Sackville

District health authorities were established by the National Health Service (Determination of Districts) Order 1981 (SI 81/1837). The information is shown in the table.

Number of District Health Authorities in England
Date Number
1981 (number established) 192
April 1990 190
April 1991 186
April 1992 178
March 1993 (current) 173

We cannot anticipate the outcome of merger proposals currently in hand, but if current proposals are agreed there will be 140 DHAs by March 1994.

We will continue to consider merger proposals where they are in the interests of patients.

Mr. Blunkett

Mr. Sackville

[holding answer 22 February 1993]: The tables give for each district in the Thames regions the revenue outturn for 1982–83 and 1991–92 (derived from the published accounts) and the 1991–92 outturn at 1982–83 prices using the GDP deflator. The national health service pay and price index for 1991–92 is not yet available.

Information on the 1992–93 allocations to districts, which will be the final cash limits for the financial year, is not held centrally.
