HC Deb 23 March 1993 vol 221 c557W
Dr. Godman

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many times each year school children are examined by a dentist in(a) Strathclyde and (b) Scotland as a whole.

Mr. Stewart

[holding answer 22 March 1993]: The community dental service is required to screen all children in local education authority schools at least three times in each child's school life. In areas of poor dental health and where availability of general dental services is poor, such screening may be more frequent. The number of dental inspections carried out for children of school age in each of the health board areas within Strathclyde region and in Scotland as a whole for the period October 1991 to September 1992, the last 12-month period for which information is available, is shown in the table.

Number of dental inspections carried out for children of school age in Scotland by Community Dental Service
Health Board Number of dental inspections October 1991—September 1992
Argyll and Clyde 5,149
Ayrshire and Arran 3,378
Greater Glasgow 12,350
Lanarkshire 23,431
All Scotland 129,138
