§ 27. Mr. TrendTo ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will make a statement on the implementation of the Criminal Justice Act 1988 with regard to the referral of lenient sentences.
§ Mr. JackThe power contained in the Act of 1988 under which the Attorney-General may refer to the Court of Appeal sentences which he considers to be unduly lenient is now widely accepted as important and necessary. The careful and discriminating use of this power by successive holders of that office has proved the wisdom of the Government's decision to introduce this provision.
