To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the latest figure for the annual increase in the retail prices index; and what were the comparable figures for January 1992 and January 1991.

In January the headline rate of RPI inflation was 1.7 per cent., down sharply from 4.1 per cent. in January 1992 and 9 per cent. in January 1991. Headline inflation is now at its lowest level for more than 25 years.
