HC Deb 01 March 1993 vol 220 cc14-6W
Mrs. Anne Campbell

To ask the Secretary of State for Education if he will set out for(a) each education authority in England and (b) in total (i) the number of available places in primary and secondary schools, respectively, (ii) the total number of children on the school rolls and (iii) the number of places considered appropriate.

Mr. Forth

It is estimated that there were some 4.5 million primary school places and some 3.5 million secondary school places in England in 1991. Information on the number of places available in each local education authority is not available. The numbers of pupils being taught in maintained primary and secondary schools in each LEA in England in January 1991 are shown in the table. It is for LEAs in the first place to decide on the number of school places considered appropriate, in the light of local need.
