HL Deb 10 June 1993 vol 546 c59WA
Lord Monson

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many Post Office employees have been convicted of offences of dishonesty committed in the course of their employment in each of the past 10 years, and how many of these offences involved conspiracy.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Trade and Industry (Baroness Denton of Wakefield)

The numbers of Post Office employees convicted of offences of dishonesty in the course of their employment since 1986–87 are as follows:

Staff offenders convicted
Numbers
1986–87 782
1987–88 1,275
1988–89 1,266
1989–90 992
1990–91 937
1991–92 663
1992–93 319

There were no convictions for offences involving conspiracy in those years. The above relate to the year in which the employee was charged. The figure for 1992–93 may not be final as further convictions may result from cases still to go before the courts. Reliable figures are not available for years prior to 1986–87.
