To ask the Secretary of State for Health (1) how many nursing mothers received dental treatment in 1990–91 and 1991–92; and what was the average cost per patient;

(2) how many pregnant women received dental treatment in 1990–91 and 1991–92; and what was the average cost per patient.

The number of courses of dental treatment for nursing mothers in England in 1991–92 was 666,816, with an average cost per course of treatment of £46.01. The number of courses of dental treatment for pregnant women in 1991–92 was 453,467, with an average cost per course of treatment was £33.78.

Figures for 1990–91 are not available.

The average cost per adult patient for each course of national health service treatment in 1990–91 was £35.58 and in 1991–92 it was £36.11.
