HL Deb 18 January 1993 vol 541 cc65-6WA
Earl Russell

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Further to the reply of Baroness Blatch (HL Deb., 3rd December, col. WA99), whether they will list the 11 cases of significant error in the schools' league tables for which the DFE or its contractors take responsibility.

Baroness Blatch

We are now aware of 17 errors in school results which were the fault of the department or its contractors. Incorrect school names were attributed to:

  • St. Bees School, Cumbria; and
  • William Crane School, Nottinghamshire.
Incorrect examination results were attributed to the following schools:
  • Dr. Challoner's High School, Buckinghamshire
  • Fort Pitt Grammar School for Girls, Kent
  • Highworth Girls' School, Kent
  • Hitchin Boys' School, Hertfordshire
  • St. Paul's School, Richmond
  • St. Swithun's School, Hampshire
  • The Perse School, Cambridge
  • Torquay Boys' Grammar School, Devon
  • Wirral County Grammar School for Girls
because some grades from the previous year had not been processed; and to
  • Bettridge Special School, Gloucestershire
  • St. Joseph's Catholic High School, Berkshire
  • Manchester High School for Girls
  • Upper Avon School, Wiltshire
  • Kesteven and Grantham Girls' School,
  • Lincolnshire
  • St. Mark's School, Hammersmith and Fulham
because one or more amendments had not been processed, or had been incorrectly made.

In most cases, the errors involved changes of only one or two percentage points.

In addition, small errors have been discovered in the overall average figures for 7 LEAs—Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Cheshire, Gloucestershire, Hillingdon, Leeds and Norfolk.

In all these cases, erratum slips are being issued and apologies sent to the schools and LEAs concerned.
