HC Deb 22 February 1993 vol 219 c467W
Mr. Martyn Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what is the policy of the various branches of the armed forces towards punishment of service men and women who are absent without leave.

Mr. Archie Hamilton

Absence without leave is an offence under the service discipline Acts and is punishable by up to two years' imprisonment. It is regarded as a serious offence as it can undermine the operational effectiveness of a unit and the morale of other personnel. Punishments awarded vary according to the circumstances of individual cases.
