HC Deb 17 December 1993 vol 234 cc974-5W
Mrs. Anne Campbell

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer which Government Departments, non-departmental public bodies and next steps agencies have introduced merit pay in the past five years; and how much extra money has been allocated to cover the costs of implementing this.

Mr. Dorrell

The Government's policy is that pay systems in the public sector need to make a regular and direct link between an individual's pay and the contribution he or she makes to the organisation. Merit or performance pay has therefore been introduced widely in Government Departments and next steps agencies, and in those non-departmental public bodies with staff whose pay follows that of civil service grades. The cost of performance pay is part of the overall pay costs of each organisation.
