HL Deb 09 December 1993 vol 550 cc85-6WA
Lord Harris of Greenwich

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What was the population of each prison in England and Wales on 1 December 1993, whether it is a dispersal, local, training, remand or open establishment, what is its Certified Normal Accommodation (CNA) limit, and the percentage by which its population exceeds the CNA.

The Minister of State, Home Office (Earl Ferrers)

Responsibility for the subject of this Question has been delegated to the Prison Service and its Director General, Mr. Derek Lewis. The Director General has therefore responded to the Question and his letter is given below.

Letter from the Director General of the Prison Service, Mr. Derek Lewis, to Lord Harris of Greenwich, dated December 1993

Lord Ferrers has asked me to reply to your recent Question about Prison Service accommodation and population.

The attached tables show the certified normal accommodation in use (that is excluding accommodation out of use for refurbishment etc), population and the percentage by which population exceeds the certified normal accommodation for each prison in England and Wales on 1 December. The prisons are grouped by function and those prisons with more than one function are listed accordingly.

As the tables are too lengthy to be produced in Hansard, a copy has been placed in the Library of the House.
