Letter from Derek Lewis to Mr. Tom Cox, dated December 1993: I have been asked to reply to your recent Question about prison hospital beds at each of the London prisons on 15 November. I would refer the hon. Member to the reply given to his earlier Question on 2 December 1993 (column 671).

Mr. Cox

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how costs are borne in respect of inmates treated at the hospital of a prison other than the one on whose roll they are counted.

Mr. Peter Lloyd

Responsibility for this matter has been delegated to the director general of the Prison Service, who has been asked to arrange for a reply.

Letter from Derek Lewis to Mr. Tom Cox, dated December 1993: The Home Secretary has asked me to reply to your recent Question about costs in respect of inmates treated at the hospital of a prison other than the one on whose roll they are counted. When a prisoner is transferred to another prison for medical reasons, the accommodation, treatment and related costs are customarily borne by the receiving prison. The transport costs are borne by the sending prison.
