HC Deb 08 December 1993 vol 234 c270W
Mr. Cohen

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will estimate the number of individuals who will provide a non-intimate sample for DNA genetic profiling purposes by the year 2000, 2010 and 2020 under his proposals; and whether he will make a statement.

Mr. Charles Wardle

The numbers will depend upon the extent to which police forces make use of the powers that the Government propose to give to them.

Mr. Cohen

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department for what period he intends that DNA genetic profiles will be retained; and whether the length of time will be affected by the nature of the offence.

Mr. Charles Wardle

The Government do not propose to set any statutory limit on the period during which the DNA records of those convicted of recordable offences can be retained.
