To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what plans he has to use any floating facility on Humberside to accommodate prisoners.

Responsibility for this matter has been delegated to the Director General of the Prison Service, who has been asked to arrange for a reply to be given.

Letter from Mr. D. Lewis to Ms Joan Ruddock, dated 3 December 1993: The Home Secretary has asked me to reply to your recent Question about the use of a floating facility on Humberside to accommodate prisoners. The use of floating vessels to accommodate prisoners is one option being considered as part of our contingency plans to deal with increases in the prison population. No final decisions have been taken to use this option or on possible locations.
