Mr. Redmond

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) for what studies the Sheehy inquiry employed(a) Ernst and Young and (b) Towers Perrin; and what was the cost thereof;

(2) what budget limits were placed on the Sheehy inquiry;

(3) if he will list in respect of the visits by the secretary to the Sheehy inquiry, Miss Jenny Rumble, to (a) Australia, (b) New Zealand, (c) the United States of America, (i) the dates of departure and return to the United Kingdom, (ii) the airline and seat class funded and used, (iii) the dates and police forces visited, (iv) the subjects studied, (v) the travel cost, (vi) the subsistence costs and (vii) other costs;

(4) if he will list in respect of Mr. Caines's Sheehy inquiry trip to Australia, (a) the dates of departure and return to the United Kingdom, (b) the airline and seat class funded and used, (c) the dates and police forces visited, (d) the subjects studied, (e) the travel cost, (t) the subsistence costs and (g) other costs.

The inquiry into police responsibilities and rewards spent £580,000 in 1992–93. Financial provision for the inquiry is £459,000 for 1993–94. The management of expenditure within these sums was the responsibility of the inquiry. The use made by the inquiry of consultancies is described in paragraphs 2.5 and 2.8 of its report, a copy of which is in the Library.
