To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many attempted escapes there have been at Long Lartin prison over the last five years; and what category of prisoners were involved.

Responsibility for this matter has been delegated to the director-general of the Prison Service, who has been asked to arrange for a reply to be given.

Letter from Derek Lewis to Mr. Michael Spicer, dated 20 April 1993:

The Home Secretary has asked me to write to you in response to your Parliamentary Question asking for details of how many incidents of attempted escape there have been at HM Prison Long Lartin over the last five years and what categories of prisoner were involved.

I regret that this information was not recorded centrally until 1 January 1990, but from information derived from the number of incidents reported to the Incident Management Support Unit, a part of the Directorate of Custody, the information available is as follows:
